Glee Rant

I'm finally getting back into my posts! It's been over a year! Sorry about that :)

I am sick to death of Glee polluting my life. My family have become addicted to this show, so now I have to put up with it being on our TV almost 24/7.

They claim that Glee's actors and actresses are highly talented at singing. They are highly talented, i'll give them that, but not at singing. More like lipsyncing, which is all Glee is. The songs are also terrible, most of the time they are crappy covers of good songs, which makes me hate it even more.

I just don't get why people are into this stupid show, and other shitty shows like it, like Jersey Shore. All of them seem overrated to me.

Science is boring, dull, too hard and irrelevant

If you ask the average high school student what they thought of science as a subject, I can guarantee that most would say something like "boring", "too hard" or "a waste of time". I completely agree, science is dull, boring, difficult and irrelevant to the outside world, even more so than Maths. The number of students studying science in the HSC is falling, less than half (44%) study science, compared with 88% studying Maths.

When older people think of science, they usually think of fun practical activities. Not any more. I'd say about 75% of the practicals students participate in are boring wastes of time. Most of the fun ones, thanks to OHS, the teacher has to demonstrate for the students. Most of the lessons are copying notes of the board or reading boring textbooks.

Also, science is hard and irrelevant. Science is most likely the hardest subject in high school, and one of the most pointless in regards to the outside world, perhaps second only to PDH. Very few jobs (other than medical or scientific jobs) require any knowledge of science, and people saying that "unless you pick maths and science, you will fail" could not be further from the truth. Perhaps it is true with maths, but for science, what a load of bullshit.

And a word of advice, if you are about to do your school certificate and did not pick any science subjects for your HSC, don't bother studying for your SC science exam. What's the point, when you are finally ridding yourself of science in a few weeks anyway?

EB Games? More like EB Lames

EB Games fails. Almost every time I buy pre-owned games there, at least one of them dosn't work. Seems to happen more with PS2 games than other consoles (don't know why), but I roughly estimate that 20-25% of their used PS2 games don't work. If you ask a staff member about it, they will say that they clean and test the games before they sell them. That is bullshit, don't believe it. I have seen someone sell a game to them, and the girl behind the counter just filed the game away, not testing or even looking at the disk for scratches.

I have never had problems with any other stores's used PS2 stuff, and I always find that JB Hi-Fi tends to have the best quality used games. The Gamesmen also has good quality games, but they tend to be more expensive than JB. Don't know about Game or Gametraders, as there are no stores in my area.

I am angry because the Australian Government's student laptops have (at my school, anyway) filters that are enforced 24/7, even when the student is AT HOME. If it only blocked porn, then yes, I would agree with it being enforced 24/7 (if you don't think that porn should be blocked on school computers, then may I suggest you vote for the Australian Sex Party in this upcoming election). But this stupid ass filter blocks almost everything, from YouTube to Facebook. I mean, if a student looks up YouTube or Facebook on their school laptop at home, who is it hurting? I am also pissed about the fact that you cannot install anything on the laptops and that you cannot run any program that you download, even if it is for school purposes.

Also, at my school, 75% of the students use their laptops to play games in class. Now, I am guilty of this, but it's really defeating the purpose of the laptops as a learning tool, instead they are distractions in class. And, even though IT block the majority of game sites, students always find ones that arn't blocked. When they get blocked, it is a matter of days before a new one is found. I wonder if IT will just give up blocking games altogether, as the school filter cannot block everything.

There are (according to rumours at my school) even porn sites that are unblocked and have remained that way for a long time. Filters are useless, even if you spend thousands on a filter, there will still be sites that it misses.

Another thing that I hate about the laptops, is that at my school, the goons in IT have put big stickers on the outside of them, with the school's name and our names on it. And, if you say that is to stop theft and sale, you can rip those stupid stickers straight off, but if you are caught at school with a laptop without a skin, then you have to pay $10 for another one. $10 just for a sticker that would have been made for 5c.

Also, the other thing that pisses me off about the Education Revolution is the laptops themselves. The government give schools $1000 per student for the purchase of laptops. But, at my school, anyway, we have been given pathetic netbooks that don't even have disk drives. I looked on eBay and many other online computer stores, and these little crap-tops cost around $200-$300 each (and I assume that schools would get a discount rate for buying in bulk). Nowhere did I see one even close to $1000. It is clear what the school are doing, they are pocketing the $1000 for every student in Year 9, and buying the cheapest laptops possible, and keeping the rest.
